Standing up for the Human Rights Firewall: Refugee Protection and Human Rights are Part of Our Democracy
We are united in our desire for a life in a society that protects and supports us, where we are involved and respected. These fundamental values—democracy, the rule of law, and human rights—form the foundation of our community. They provide us with stability, security, and support. They guarantee that our inherent dignity and freedom are upheld. It is our collective responsibility to preserve and defend these values.
The strength of our society lies in its diversity: different ideas, backgrounds, religions, worldviews, and identities enrich us. Refugees from many parts of the world have long been a part of our society. They work here, engage in their communities, and raise their children. The actions of individuals that shock and horrify us, such as the terrible attack in Aschaffenburg, must never lead to entire groups being stigmatized, racialized, or deprived of their rights.
We are all part of this society: whether refugees, immigrants, or born here, we all belong. Basic human and civil rights apply to all of us, or they apply to none. The current discussions about tightening nationality, residence, and asylum laws, which are also being driven forward by the CDU, threaten this fundamental understanding. Polarizing and blatantly illegal demands for the rejection of people seeking protection at Germany’s internal borders, the abolition of family reunification for those with subsidiary protection, forced returns to war and crisis zones, and the blanket detention of all persons required to leave the country, are not suited to address current societal challenges. They do not provide more security or additional affordable housing, daycare spaces, or equal educational opportunities, let alone a functioning healthcare system that adequately addresses mental health issues. Worse still, their clear illegality weakens our constitution and the value of European and international law.
Therefore, we appeal to the representatives of the CDU: Commit to the human rights firewall and stand with us for social cohesion, the rule of law, democracy, and human rights.
Please refrain from rhetoric and demands during the election campaign that further divide our society and incite hostility between people. In various EU countries, the consequences of authoritarian politics can be seen. There, a “us versus them” mentality is fueled, and politics targeting queer people, migrants, the unemployed, and other minorities is pursued. Violence at borders—even against children—has already become the norm. At the same time, the institutions of the rule of law are being undermined, the independence of the judiciary is under attack, and the work of lawyers and journalists is obstructed or restricted. As a conservative, Christian-democratic party, the CDU must stand against this and clearly distance itself.
We have a choice: Do we want to remain an open, diverse, and democratic country that upholds the rights and freedoms of all and respects and protects people in their differences? Or do we return to a dark time when basic human and civil rights apply only to some and entire segments of the population are made scapegoats for societal problems?
Political action is demonstrated through laws and measures that are realistic, values-based, and compliant with the law.
This is our expectation of the CDU—both during the election campaign and especially when it comes to possible government responsibility. The undersigned associations and organizations call on the CDU leadership and all participants in the party congress: Stand by your Christian and democratic values and preserve the rule of law and human rights for the benefit of all people in Germany. Stand up for the human rights firewall—with words and actions.
